Synopsis

This book provides a practical and structured introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) using the open-source software QGIS as the main learning platform. It is primarily aimed at students and professionals in the Geosciences who wish to acquire or strengthen fundamental GIS skills, with a particular focus on vector data. The work adopts an applied, hands-on approach, emphasizing real-world examples and progressive exercises while minimizing theoretical exposition. Key topics covered include the QGIS interface, project and data management, coordinate reference systems, cartographic symbology, vector data editing and digitization, and the integration of external geospatial information sources through web services. The book is supported by complementary online educational resources, such as instructional videos and datasets, fostering autonomous, incremental, and problem-oriented learning. This first volume establishes the conceptual and technical foundations required for geospatial analysis in a GIS environment, preparing readers for more advanced applications to be addressed in a subsequent volume focused on raster data and spatial analysis.

Author Biography

Pedro Nogueira, Department of Geosciences, School of Science and Technology, University of Évora

Pedro Miguel Madureira Pimenta Nogueira is an Associate Professor with Habilitation in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Évora and a senior researcher at the Institute of Earth Sciences, where he coordinates the Earth Observation and Data Science challenge. He holds a PhD in Geology from the University of Porto and his scientific and teaching activities lie at the intersection of Geosciences, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and spatial data analysis, with a strong focus on thematic cartography, geochemical mapping, and spatial modelling applied to mineral resources, environmental studies, and geosystems. He is the author and co-author of numerous national and international scientific publications addressing the statistical and spatial analysis of geoscientific data, including the use of GIS, the R programming language, and machine learning methods for high-resolution cartographic production. He has extensive experience in GIS and cartography education and training, as well as in knowledge transfer and international cooperation, having participated in and coordinated geological mapping and technical capacity-building projects in Portugal, Mozambique, and Timor-Leste.
